Founded in 2013, the Black Lives Matter organization was founded as a result of the death of Trayvon Martin at the hands of a police officer. Dedicated to nonviolent protests of police brutality, the Black Lives Matter movement has exploded as a result of the murder of George Floyd. George Floyd, a 46 year-old African-American man, was killed while being arrested for allegedly using a counterfeit bill. The police officer kneeled on his neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds while Mr. Floyd screamed “I can’t breathe.”
In June 2020, United States President Donald Trump posted a Twitter update stating his wish to designate Antifa as a terrorist organization; this happened at the height of the global protests against police brutality and racial injustice, and it also took place in the backdrop of the coronavirus pandemic. For many Americans, this was the first time they heard Antifa mentioned in a political context, and Trump’s tweet suggested an established structure complete with leadership and active chapters.
